Course Description

This 3 hour workshop is all about taking the next step; turning technical understanding into creative expression. We’ll explore how to use light, composition, and timing to build meaning into your images. Through a mix of guided shooting and discussion, you’ll learn to recognize what draws your eye, refine your visual voice, and start thinking in sequences instead of single frames. While beginning to develop your own visual style. You’ll Learn: How to use light direction and quality to shape mood Building stronger composition and framing Approaching a scene with storytelling intent Editing and sequencing basics — how to pick your best images How to develop a personal visual style Structure (3 hours): Introduction + Seeing Exercise (30 min) Review of exposure + quick technical refresh Discussion: what makes a compelling image Warm-up: shoot a simple object 3 different ways Guided Photo Walk (1.5 hr) Focused exercises on light, composition, and story Students explore Chinatown or Kensington area with short prompts Group Review + Discussion (1 hr) Review and sequence a short 3–5 photo story Group critique and feedback. How to continue building projects or personal work. What to Bring: A camera (digital or film) you’re comfortable with A few favorite images from your past work (optional) Notebook or laptop for notes and review
